BETWEEN the LIONS

Dear ACA Families,

This week marks one of the most unique and meaningful experiences in the life of our Upper School students: Winterim. At Asheville Christian Academy, Winterim is designed to extend learning beyond the four walls of the classroom. It provides opportunities for students to grow in Christlike character, explore vocational interests, serve others, and engage in hands-on learning that simply cannot be replicated within a traditional academic schedule.

For some students, this includes international travel where they participate in immersive service and educational experiences while encountering different cultures and perspectives. These trips are carefully led by our faculty and staff who walk closely alongside our students—guiding, teaching, supervising, and shepherding them every step of the way. Caring for students away from home for more than a week is a significant responsibility, and we are deeply grateful for the faculty and staff who faithfully serve in this way.

Closer to home, many of our Upper School students are participating in thoughtfully designed Winterim courses, internships, service initiatives, and experiential learning opportunities. Throughout the week, faculty mentor students through vocational shadowing, creative intensives, hands-on projects, and community engagement. These experiences help students begin to see how God has uniquely gifted them and how those gifts might be used in service to Him.

Winterim reflects who we are as a school. Our mission is to serve Jesus Christ and uphold His pre-eminence, partnering with Christian parents to shepherd and inspire Christ-oriented lives. Winterim is one of the many ways we live out that mission—forming students not only through academic instruction, but also through service, leadership, exploration, and real-world engagement.

As our students and faculty participate this week, I would ask our entire community to join us in prayer:

  • Pray for safe travel and protection for those serving and learning abroad.

  • Pray for wisdom, endurance, and discernment for the faculty and staff leading these experiences.

  • Pray for meaningful relationships and genuine spiritual growth in the hearts of our students.

  • Pray for clarity of calling as students explore internships and vocational pathways.

  • Pray that Christ would be honored in every conversation, classroom, airport, work site, and act of service.

We are grateful for the faculty and staff who invest deeply in our students during this time and for the families who support this important part of the Upper School experience.

Winterim is more than a week on the calendar. It is part of how we shape young men and women who will follow Christ, engage the world thoughtfully, and steward the gifts God has given them.

Together in Christ, Jesus.

Dr. Jason Putnam

Head of School

Recovery Updates

We’re excited to share several encouraging updates as recovery work continues across campus.

Tennis: Our tennis courts will be fully finished and completed over Spring Break. We are grateful for the progress being made and look forward to seeing our student-athletes back on the completed courts soon.

Soccer: This week we are welcoming our soccer teams home for practice, and we are incredibly thankful that they are able to use our fields again. It’s a meaningful step forward as our programs return to familiar spaces.

Baseball: Join us on March 16 at 4:30 PM as our Varsity Baseball team hosts Enka High School. This will be their first home game since the flood, and we would love for our community to come out and celebrate this milestone together.

We remain grateful for the patience, support, and encouragement from our school community as we move forward towards a fully restored campus.

This month, our Character Education focus is on Self-Control and Gentleness, with an emphasis on Honesty and Integrity. Jesus valued honesty and integrity, teaching that a life aligned with truth and goodness reflects His character. Throughout His ministry, Jesus consistently spoke the truth, even when it was difficult, demonstrating that honesty is not only right but loving. He showed that truth should always be used to build others up and to honor God.

Jesus modeled perfect self-control and gentleness in the way He interacted with others. Even when faced with opposition, misunderstanding, and injustice, He responded with calm strength and unwavering integrity. His example teaches students that self-control is choosing what is right over what is easy, and gentleness is strength guided by love. Honesty and integrity require both, disciplining our words and actions so they reflect Christ.

It is important to teach students that honesty and integrity are the foundation for strong relationships and mutual respect. When students learn to be truthful, trustworthy, and fair in all things, they reflect Christ in their daily lives. Acting justly and honorably builds trust and creates a community marked by kindness and accountability. Scripture reminds us of this truth in Luke 6:31, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

As we focus on self-control and gentleness this month, may we encourage students to be truthful and trustworthy in all things, allowing their words and actions to reflect Christ’s character in every situation.

Host an International Student

Did you know that ACA has an International Student Program? At Asheville Christian Academy, we are committed to fostering a diverse community that values cultural exchange and understanding. Through our International Homestay Program, we welcome students from around the world to be part of our school family.

Would you consider hosting an international student next school year?
As a host family, you’ll receive a $1,000 monthly stipend to help offset costs. Even more importantly, you’ll have the opportunity to provide a warm, loving, and nurturing home for a student far from their own family. Hosting is more than just cultural exchange—it’s a chance to build lifelong connections and friendships while reflecting Christ’s love and compassion.

What’s it like to host? Hear firsthand from three ACA host families here!

For more information about the International Student Program, please contact Deborah Stuart.

Thank you for prayerfully considering this meaningful opportunity!
