The instrumental program at ACA is based upon the Symphonic Wind Ensemble consisting of Woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Fifth grade exploratory band begins the journey to instrumental musicianship and continues through the offering of leveled bands below. Instead of dividing all the instrumental groups by age, our students have the opportunity to move up to higher levels as able.

Each year the bands and choirs join together to present three concerts on campus. These are great times of community as a majority of our Middle and Upper Schools come together to make music for the glory of God. The Middle and Upper School Christmas Program is a highlight of our Fine Arts Program each year. This concert is a continuous flow of student music that focuses solely on the Christian celebration of the season. Our Fundraising Dinner Concert is a great time of fellowship that allows our groups to prepare lighter music selections, and our Fine Arts Award Concert at the end of the year is a great time of celebration that allows our entire Fine Arts Department to come together.

Sixth Grade Band:   In the sixth grade, students have a music class and may choose to take band or choir. Many students continue on the instrument from fifth grade, but this band provides an opportunity to begin a new instrument and also is a great entry point to students who join ACA in sixth grade.

Through the year, this band performs at the Christmas Concert and the Fine Arts Awards Concert at the end of the year. Some years we are also able to participate in additional events, which have included ACSI Band Festivals and Solo and Ensemble Festivals.

Concert Band:   For seventh and eighth grade instrumental students, and advanced sixth grade students as the schedule allows, this ensemble begins to perform more and focuses on ensemble sound and development. This ensemble participates in the North Carolina Bandmaster's Association events in the Western District. These events included District Music Performance Assessment and All-District Band. At the end of the year, this ensemble also participates in the Carowinds Music Festival.

Symphonic Band:   The top ensemble is composed of upper school students and select seventh and eighth grade students who have show the ability and diligence to participate at a high level. The Symphonic Band has many events throughout the year in addition to our school concerts. These events have included: The Black Mountain Christmas Parade, Southern Star Music Festival, local church services, collaborative concerts with other bands, and performances and clinics at Disney World.

The Symphonic Band is one of only a few Christian school programs that participate in the North Carolina Bandmaster's Association events alongside the public schools. We attend the District Music Performance Assessment, Solo and Ensemble Festival, and All-District Band. We have had students accepted into the All-District band every year for the past decade.

Pit Orchestra:   Students in the Symphonic Band may also participate in pit orchestra for our Upper School Musical. In addition, other students on string instruments may join this ensemble, as well. This opportunity provides a great way for students to excel and be challenged on their instruments.

Private Music Lessons:   A variety of instrumental music lessons are offered on campus both during and after school. These are dependant on teacher and student schedules, but are made available as we are able. Currently there are teachers offering: piano, voice, guitar, flute, and brass instruments.
